Victim Assistance

The Alton Police Department Victim/Witness Assistance Program, in existence since 1989, is funded through the Illinois Attorney General's Office.  Through the Crime Victim's Compensation Act, financial compensation is provided to those innocent victims of violent crimes and to their families.

Written contact/follow-up is made with all victims of violent crimes.  As situations dictate, personal contact is made to determine the needs of the crime victim.  Responsibilities of the program are crisis intervention, victim compensation information, information and referrals, social service advocacy, order of protection assistance, transportation, community education, police training, case investigation up-dates, follow-up, jail release notification, prevention programs and safety checks for victims.  Victim assistance is an important part of any community crime prevention effort.  Such programs not only encourage victims to report crimes and testify in court, but also show that the community cares about its residents.

The Illinois Crime Victim Compensation Program provides direct financial
assistance to innocent victims of violent crime to reimburse out-of-pocket expenses related to the crime.

The Violent Crime Victim Assistance (VCVA) Program provides grants to victim and witness assistance programs throughout the state. Here, you will find links to the Quarterly Report, Eligibility Requirements, List of Grantees, RFP Information and Application Kits.

The Automated Victim Notification System allows crime victims across Illinois to obtain timely and reliable information about criminal cases and the custody status of offenders 24 hours a day via telephone, Web or e-mail.

The Statewide Victim Assistance Program provides services to crime victims and witnesses whose cases are prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney General, including Sexually Violent Persons petitions. The program is also available to the 102 State's Attorneys across Illinois.
